Preparing for a re-inspection

A calm, practical checklist for turning a disappointing rating into a strong one.

A lower rating than you hoped for is not the end of the story. Most businesses can request a re-rating once improvements are made. Here is how to approach it without the stress.

1. Read the report properly

Your inspection report lists exactly what fell short. It is the single most useful document you have — every action you take should trace back to something in it.

2. Fix the records first

Confidence-in-management issues are usually the quickest to resolve:

  • A simple, consistent cleaning schedule
  • Temperature records that are actually filled in
  • A documented food safety management system (Safer Food, Better Business is fine for most)

3. Sort the structural basics

You do not need a refit. Officers look for clean, well-maintained and pest-free — handwashing facilities stocked, surfaces in good repair, and no gaps where pests could enter.

4. Get the team on board

Standards slip when only one person knows the routine. Make the basics part of every shift so the kitchen is inspection-ready on any given day, not just the one you booked.

5. Request the re-rating when you are genuinely ready

There is usually a wait before you can request a re-visit, and you typically only get one. Use the time to embed the changes — then book with confidence.

If you would like a second pair of eyes before you request it, that is exactly the kind of calm, no-judgement support we offer.
